Little Devils

Introduction

This was my University project, which I completed with four other class members. We had to create a level with the main theme of Escape Room.

The story is of a boy named Max he is a 4-year-old boy who is friends with an evil toy unicorn that talks and plays with him as much as he can. He locks Max in rooms, making him do a multitude of puzzles to be able to escape, whilst also making Max get in a lot of unwanted trouble.

Platform: PC

Theme: Escape Room

For this project, my main contorbitons where Game and level design. The helping with the initial overall idea of the game and the structure that the game would run, doing multiple block-outs, and putting down the fundamentals and rules of each level, planning out how it was going to run controling the speed and pace of the level and play testing as much of the game, making sure that the game ran as smoothly as possible.

Levels

For this game, I aimed to create a short yet enjoyable experience that was not too difficult for new players, while also encouraging exploration. We decided on only two levels: the Bedroom(Tutorial) and the Daycare(Main Level)

Bedroom: I designed this level to teach the player the core gameplay mechanics and what to expect for the rest of the game.

The main objective for this level was to get the key for the exit door. For the player to do this, they will have to do sub-objects to gain access to other puzzles. The level consited 3 different puzzles.

  • Finding the toy gun and shooting the targets. (Batroom Key)

  • Finding three batteries to play Simon says

  • Fianlly Simon says to unlock the exit door (Yellow Key)

This encourages the player to explore the room in search of the items to help them escape.

Daycare:  This is the main challenge for the player, where they have to find 5 keys to escape and finish the game.

From the player experience from the previous level, they know they need to explore and play. This would help solve some of the puzzles, as multiple pieces are spread all around the corners of the Daycare, and only by playing some of the games will they discover new clues.

The puzzle for the Daycare.

  • Maze (Red Key)

  • Targets(Green Key)

  • Blocks (Yellow Key)

  • Xylophone (Purple Key)

  • Ring Tower (Blue Key)

Story Narriative

For the story, I wanted it to be told in the eyes of a child, and wanted to make it enjoyable for younger audiences, so we decided on drawings for the visuals for the cut scenes and rhymes for the voices. So another team member drew, wrote a script, and recorded all the scenes. This was to help show the user how to play the game while also telling the story of the game. making it very easy for users to understand and get players involved with the level a lot quicker.

My Contributions

Overview

Overall, I'm still really proud of this first project and feel that we achieved our goal of an escape room theme. I learnt so much from it. Even with a team of 4, this project took a lot of hours and effort to put together and playtest, but after seeing it go from the block-out stage, working its way to the end product, it felt such an achievement, and I will always look back with a smile when I hear my own and my friend's terrible voice acting at 4 am.
